WAU Men’s Basketball Claims Thrilling 76-71 Victory Over Indiana University East in Home Opener

Takoma Park, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) men's basketball team delivered a gutsy performance in their home opener, defeating Indiana University East 76-71 on Saturday, November 16, at the Pitt. The Shock bounced back from recent road challenges with a spirited effort, fueled by a passionate home crowd.

The game was tightly contested from the opening tip, with both teams exchanging leads throughout the first half. WAU relied on the scoring prowess of Rande Harper, who poured in 19 first-half points, and strong defensive contributions from Jaziel Mensah-Agyekum who recorded two steals and five assists in the first 20 minutes. The Shock entered halftime with a slim 37-32 lead.

In the second half, the Red Wolves turned up the intensity, pulling within four points of the Shock with a scoring surge with less than five minutes left in the game. WAU responded with another steal and a personal 5-0 run from Mensah-Agyekum, and key rebounds from Harper, regaining momentum. Down the stretch, Mensah-Agyekum made critical free throws to secure the 76-71win as WAU's defense held firm in the closing minutes.

"We beat a very good team tonight in IU East," said head coach Jerry McFarland. "The home crowd was amazing, it felt so good to be back home. I know our players fed off the energy, I really appreciate the support from Shock Nation and everyone that came out to support us. Mark Hester is one of the solid coaches in NAIA basketball. We don't have many people who are willing to play us at home, so I respect IU East for always being solid with scheduling. I am also super proud of our guys because, despite our record right now, they have continued to work and stay committed to the process. They played very well and showed we are a good team also."

The Shock shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field, forcing the Red Wolves into 15 turnovers and a 35.5 shooting percentage. Harper led all scorers, finishing with 29 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and one steal, while Mensah-Agyekum followed with 18 points, eight assists, four steals, and three rebounds.

Seth Wright (12), Julian Kin (6), Jaylin McNeil (5), Jalen Anderson (2), Armon Williams (2), and Felix McGhee (2) all found the scoring column. Eight Shock players saw time on the floor in the victory on Flower Ave.

The victory improves WAU's record to 2-6 and sets a positive tone for their home campaign. The Shock will look to build on this win as they prepare to travel to New York to face Berkeley College on Tuesday, December 3.
