WAU Women's Basketball Team Secures Impressive 76-62 Homecoming Victory Over Oakwood
TAKOMA PARK, MD - In a thrilling season opener, the Washington Adventist (WAU) women's basketball team showcased their skills and determination as they emerged victorious in a resounding 76-62 win against Oakwood University (0-1). The game, held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, as part of the Homecoming festivities, saw the team electrify the home crowd with their stellar performance.
From the opening tip-off, it was evident that WAU (1-0) was determined to establish dominance on their home court. The team's cohesion and chemistry were fully displayed as they swiftly moved the ball and executed their plays precisely. Their relentless energy on both ends of the court was a significant factor in their success throughout the match and helped the Shock jump out to an early 8-0 lead over the Ambassadors.
Coach Jered Lyon's game plan came to fruition, and the players executed it flawlessly. Led by the veteran dynamic trio of point guard Sarah Shamdeen, guard Shelby Ricks, and center Nyelle Allen, who contributed 17 and 12 points, respectively, WAU consistently pressured Oakwood's defense. Shamdeen and Rick's lightning-quick drives to the basket left defenders in their wake, while Allen's ability to finish through contact added to their offensive firepower.
"I'm really proud of the way our group responded to early adversity," said Coach Lyons. "After our hot start, we were battling back the entire game. Instead of pointing fingers, we banded together. Our upperclassmen stepped up in a major way. It was a great way to open the season."
The team's solid defense proved to be an equally vital component of their victory. The Shock's tenacious full-court press disrupted the Ambassador's offensive rhythm and forced 22 turnovers, allowing the home team to convert those into fast-break points. Moreover, the team's disciplined rebounding effort denied Oakwood's second-chance opportunities, holding them to just seven for the night.
Throughout the game, the moral support from the fans uplifted the spirits of the WAU players. The electrifying cheers and chants echoed through the gym, building an intense atmosphere that motivated each player to give their best. It was evident that the team drew strength from the passionate Homecoming crowd, which played a significant role in their commanding performance.
Despite losing the 30-26 halftime lead, Oakwood University fought until the final whistle. The game was a testament to both teams' competitive spirit, highlighting the true essence of collegiate-level sportsmanship.
This impressive season-opening victory for the Shock sets an optimistic tone for the upcoming season. With their superb teamwork, undeniable talent, and strong coaching staff, they have undoubtedly made a statement to their competitors.
