WAU Women’s Basketball Triumphs in Home Opener Against University of Virginia Lynchburg, 70-49

Takoma Park, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team claimed a decisive victory in their home opener, defeating the University of Virginia Lynchburg 70-49 on Sunday, November 17, at the Pitt. The Shock showcased a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense to secure their fourth win of the season.

WAU came out strong in the first quarter, setting the tone and forcing Virginia-Lynchburg into 14 turnovers led by Deryanis Colon Velez, who recorded three first-quarter steals. Isabela Lujan-Gonzales added key field goals to set up the Shock for a successful night after the first quarter.

The Shock's defense continued to control the game in the second quarter, utilizing their defensive pressure to force ten more turnovers and create fast-break opportunities. WAU headed into halftime with a commanding 37-24 lead, with Lujan-Gonzales contributing 15 first-half points.

In the second half, WAU maintained its lead by effectively sharing the ball and crashing the boards. Armani Ball provided a spark off the bench, scoring 13 points and grabbing nine crucial rebounds. Although the Dragons mounted a brief comeback in the fourth quarter, the Shock's defensive discipline ensured the 49-70 win.

"We were proud of the group and how we responded after facing a NAIA Top 25 opponent," said head coach Jered Lyons. "We played together & showed a lot of heart. We scheduled a really challenging opening schedule that forced us to grow quickly. It's always good when you can come home and play in front of friends and family. "

The Shock shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field and forced the Tigers into 39 turnovers. Lujan-Gonzales led all scorers finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Tye Queen followed with 14 points. Ball contributed a near double-double performance recording 13 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Colon Velez filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven steals, five assists, and three rebounds.

Bethany Fowler (6), Melanie Aguilar (5), and Abby Bryant (2) found the scoring column as well. Nine players saw the floor in the victory.

With the victory, WAU improves to 4-3 on the season. The Shock will look to build on this momentum when they take on NCAA Division I Morgan State University on Wednesday, November 20.
