WAU Women’s Basketball Earns Hard-Fought Victory Over West Virginia Tech

Portsmouth, OH – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team secured a thrilling 76-72 victory over West Virginia Tech on Sunday, November 24, in Portsmouth, Ohio. The win marked a resilient effort by the Shock against a formidable opponent.

WAU started strong, with an aggressive offensive approach led by Isabela Lujan-Gonzales, who finished the game with a team-high 16 points. The Shock's defense also played a crucial role in limiting the Golden Bears' scoring opportunities in the opening half, giving WAU a narrow 37-35 lead at halftime.

The second half saw back-and-forth action as both teams traded baskets. West Virginia Tech attempted a late-game rally, but clutch shooting from the Shock and key free throws in the closing moments sealed the victory for WAU. Tye Queen contributed significantly, adding 13 points and seven rebounds, while the bench provided crucial depth throughout the game.

Deryanis Colon Velez (12), Bethany Fowler (11), Abby Bryant (9), Melanie Aguilar (8), and Sanaa Morrow (7) also found the scoring column. Eight Shock players saw time on the floor in the victory.

"That's how you bounce back," said WAU head coach Jered Lyons. "Everyone contributed and executed down the stretch. We will have some much-needed rest for the holiday break before returning to Maryland to face a top-ten NCAA Division III team."

With the victory, the Shock improved their season record to 5-5. They will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face John Hopkins University on Monday, December 2 in Baltimore, MD.
