WAU Women’s Basketball Triumphs Over Cheyney University, 61-54

TAKOMA PARK, MD — The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team secured a hard-fought victory over Cheyney University, defeating the Wolves 61-54 on Wednesday, January 8, at the Pitt. The win showcased WAU's resilience and team effort as they outlasted a determined Cheyney squad.

The Shock was led by Tye Queen, who delivered a stellar performance with 15 points and six rebounds, while Isabela Lujan-Gonzales provided crucial support with 12 points, five steals, four rebounds, and three assists. WAU set the tone early with strong defensive play and efficient scoring, entering halftime with a narrow lead of 34-27.

In the second half, Cheyney mounted a comeback, fueled by aggressive play in the paint and accurate shooting from the perimeter. Cheyney cut the lead to four with under a minute left on the clock. However, WAU responded with clutch plays in the final minutes, including Melanie Aguilar's commanding block which led to an offensive rebound and "and-one" for Queen, to secure the 61-54 victory.

The Shock shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field and forced 18 turnovers. Along with Queen and Lujan-Gonzales, Amani Ball (10), Deryanis Colon Velez (9), Sanaa Morrow (5), Melanie Aguilar (4), Abby Bryant (3), and Bethany Fowler (3) also found the scoring column. Eight Shock players saw time on the floor.

The win improved WAU's record to 6-7 and highlighted the team's determination as they continue their season. The Shock will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they face CCBC Essex tonight in Baltimore, MD.
