WAU Women’s Volleyball Falls to Frederick Community College 3-1

Frederick, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's volleyball team battled hard but fell 3-1 to Frederick Community College (FCC) on September 17, 2024, in a tough road match. Despite a strong showing in the first set, the Shock couldn't maintain the momentum, dropping their third match of the season.

WAU came out strong in the first set, quickly taking control with aggressive serves and solid net play. FCC struggled to find their footing early on, allowing the Shock to build a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. The Shock capitalized on FCC's seven errors, winning the opening set 25-19.

FCC regrouped in the second set, playing with renewed energy and focus. The Shock, behind the leadership of captain Samiah and Ariyanna Gross and standout performances from Candace Kapualani Cabansag and Jordyn Stafford, took control of the set. However, after several errors, FCC's strong offense prevailed in the close-set, winning 25-22 to level the match at 1-1.

FCC responded strongly in the third set, maintaining momentum with quick attacks and sharp defense. WAU kept it competitive but struggled to get over the hump, falling 25-20 as FCC moved ahead 2-1 in the match.

The fourth set saw WAU fighting to extend the match, with Chanel Schmidt delivering key blocks at the net and Lynell White orchestrating the offense. Despite their efforts, FCC's strong hitting and disciplined play proved too much for the Shock. FCC closed out the set 25-19, winning the match 3-1.

For WAU, Samiah Gross led the team with 14 kills and ten digs, while Ariyanna Gross contributed nine kills, eleven digs, and one block. Defensively, Cabansag recorded 17 digs, six kills, and two blocks, and Stafford added 16 assists, five kills, 18 digs, and two blocks at the net.

With this loss, WAU's record now stands at 2-3, 0-0 as they prepare for their next match against Rosemont College on Thursday, September 19. The Shock will aim to bounce back as they continue their season.
